Workplace of the week, Kallista. One of the most romantic gardens imaginable.
One of the many benefits of working in Kallista is the beautiful drive to and from work. I could hardly believe it the first time I drove there to do a quote – the endless giant ferns and gums that lined the roadway and beyond. I was so used to bumper-to-bumper traffic mayhem and congestion and even during peak hour I could enjoy the drive and the view at a reasonable pace.
I have re-built an existing deck to make it more user-friendly and stronger in one of Kallista’s prettiest residential gardens. The existing deck had been there for around 20 years and had served the residents well, but needed updating due to timber rot. I also added some steps to make access a lot easier. The decking was treated pine and when given a couple of coats of clear oil, became a lovely golden hue. It is so important to maintain decking by oiling it every 6 months, otherwise it will fade to grey and lose its strength and shape.
Timber rot repair is another project I’ve done in Kallista and it is a problem that affects all of Melbourne really. The smallest of openings in a window sill or doorway can lead to moisture or direct rain entering behind the paint and slowly wearing away the timber underneath. The best treatment is to remove all the damaged timber and fit new treated pine in its place. The interior and exterior surfaces also require timber preservation treatment, priming and 2 coats of exterior paint. The cost of timber rot repair is much less than replacing an entire window or door jamb, but needs to be stopped early.
