Decking in Melbourne
There are so many different styles and options with the type of deck you choose. Decks can be built around existing trees to provide natural shade and to enhance your outdoor living experience.Elevated, free-standing decks can be situated away from the house to take advantage of views or breezes or provide privacy. Alternatively they can lead directly out from your front door or rear living space to increase your relaxation and entertaining space. Consider your lifestyle and where you like to spend much of your personal or social time and a deck can be designed in a size, shape or place to complement your requirements.
In Melbourne decking timber are available in many types for you to choose from, depending on your style and budget. Treated pine and merbau are popular but my favourite would be jarrah – a deep, red/ brown Australian hardwood that is incredibly weather-resistant and suits period and contemporary settings.
Any deck that is 1m or more from the ground must have a balustrade or handrail around the perimeter. While typically built in timber, balustrades can also be made from glass or include stainless steel horizontal wiring.
The style of your decking is really limited to your imagination. Even a standard rectangular deck can incorporate built-in bench seats that double as storage areas with a hinged top. Built in planter boxes or ice buckets can also add a unique and functional aspect.
